the big news in early september, 2001 was the disappearance of chandre levy, a young bright washington talent, a constituent of then u.s. representative from modesto california, gary condit.
condit was a big family values guy, lambasting then pres. clinton for his lewinskian daliances.
then 911 came along and this was virtually forgotten by the press and public.
levy's decomposed body was found in a park about one year later.
a search of levy's apartment turned up panties with condit's dna.
a trial in d.c. finished up a day or two ago where one ingmar quandique, a nicaraguan gang member was convicted of the murder.
prosecution presented no cause of death, no weapon, no dna, but essentially, only evidence that quandique had assaulted(not killed) 2 women earlier in this same area.
the thrust of the prosecution was a jailhouse confession during which quandique allegedly confessed to 2 inmates, one of whom was called to testify.
ex-congressman condit was called to testify at the trial, and when asked to explainhis relationship with levy, he said that she had been a constituent.
when probed about whether their relationship had been intimate, the moral titan replied with "have you no decency? what has america come to?
her privacy, and mine needs protected."
levy was fully 30 years younder than levy.
condit never admited the affair, although a few of condit's other conquests did step up.
his son has been doing the talk show route explaining how his beloved daddy had been railroaded by the press and how forthcoming condit ad been.
is condit the killer? likely not.
could he have contracted her death? perhaps, perhaps not.
oh, one more thought.
condit would not allow his apartment to be searched until 30 days after the disappearance.
still, i'm very uneasy about this case, and the prosecutors' zeal to convict, with NO evidence. it is a case that will likely never be solved.
what do you think?
the news media seeemed to have lost interest in this case.
